Downtown Bungalow Retreat

This project features a 1920’s Florida Cracker house set in the middle of downtown Sarasota.

Original Florida Cracker House in downtown Sarasota. Mostly native plants, in an urban setting.

Starting with the front of the house, the walk is elevated pushing the steps out to the sidewalk inviting guest to come through the lush landscape to the front door. Red Button Ginger, Silver Saw Palmetto, Fakahatchee Grass and Red Penta push out from their confines, creating the feel of a Florida version of a country English Garden. Shade from the native slash pine on the southern property line allows a different approach to the planting design. Steel edging keeps the limestone path more formal in tone, which keeps the Green Pepperomia and the Wart Fern contained.

Elephant Ear ad a more vertical element and the whole affect is on of a lush, tropical shade garden. The deck surrounding two sides of the existing pool also create seating for a more relaxed and informal feel.

The deck provides several functions; it connects the main house with the guest house; it provides informal seating at deck level; and it creates a dining / bbq area adjacent the main house.
